Job Description:

Role Summary/Purpose: 

The AVP, Public Cloud Engineer will be a member of a Cloud Team responsible for engineering and supporting public cloud infrastructure.  The Engineer will ensure that the foundation, landing zones, and workloads hosted in the public cloud are highly available, fault tolerant, scalable, and secure.  Such workloads must align with Synchrony Policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. The Engineer will achieve these outcomes using automation and continuous integration/continuous delivery.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Build and Enable Core Platforms: Develop and deploy AWS-based platforms

  • Cloud Infrastructure Development: Utilize Terraform for automation, ensuring scalable and reliable infrastructure. 

  • Cloud Networking and Security: Design and implement automation for secure cloud networking, including subnets, routing, load balancing, firewalls, and security measures. 

  • Automation Engineering: Build automation scripts using Terraform, Ansible, or Python to optimize platform deployment and management. 

  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless platform integration and functionality. 

  • Security Controls: Ensure compliance with financial industry standards and best practices; including internal, industry (e.g. PCI), and government regulations (e.g. FedRAMP). 

  • Architecture: Promote best practices for cloud architecture, governance, and operations across the organization.  

  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred but not required and a minimum of 5+ years of experience in IT infrastructure or cloud architecture; OR in lieu of a degree, 10+ years of experience IT infrastructure or cloud architecture 

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and deploying solutions on AWS 

  • Experience in banking OR other highly regulated industries with a focus on compliance frameworks such as PCI DSS, GDPR or SOC 2 

  • Proven expertise designing, implementing, and securing full scale AWS IaaS environments and virtual datacenters (including infrastructure, networking, storage services) 

  • Advanced proficiency with IaC tools like Terraform, CloudFormation or AWS CDK 

  • Deep understanding of cloud networking, identify management, security, and governance

  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster collaboration across DevOps, Engineering and other cross-functional teams 

  • Proficiency in analyzing complex challenges and making data-driven decisions 

  • Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and priorities and staying up to date to drive innovation and continuous improvement 

Highly Recommended AWS Certifications: 

  • AWS Certified Security – Specialty  

  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer  

  • AWS Certified Advanced Networking

Grade/Level: 11

The salary range for this position is 115,000.00 – 200,000.00 USD Annual and is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.

Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge.

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles.  Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles.  Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months’ time in position before they can post.  All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
