Role Summary/Purpose:
The API Engagement Engineer advocates for Application and API development teams across the organization, supporting multiple teams in parallel. This role provides best practices for REST API development with a focus on API design, security, lifecycle management, and documentation. The API Engagement Engineer partners closely with Solution Architects and engineering teams to enable consistent, scalable, and reusable API implementations across complex multi-service environments. The role also designs and reviews API specifications to ensure adherence to REST and enterprise standards.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Educate and enable teams to adopt and effectively use Synchrony’s API development toolchain and standards.
- Provide API design guidance and conduct API design/specification reviews to ensure alignment with REST and OpenAPI best practices.
- Help teams leverage the API Gateway to meet enterprise requirements (e.g., security controls, traffic management, and governance).
- Promote best practices for Microservice/SOA application development, including API consistency, reuse, and maintainability.
- Learn Synchrony’s business domains and assist teams in maturing APIs into enterprise-grade, productized APIs suitable for broader consumption.
- Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field with 2–3 years of modern application development experience; or, in lieu of a degree, 3–5 years of relevant experience.
- 1+ year of experience designing and/or building REST APIs in a modern application environment.
- Experience working with Apigee (preferred) or a similar API Gateway product.
- Working knowledge of Java/Spring Boot and/or Node.js (JavaScript) in the context of API development.
- Experience authoring and reviewing OpenAPI specifications (YAML/JSON) aligned to REST architectural style.
- Experience working in Agile delivery models and familiarity with tools such as JIRA, Bitbucket, and CI/CD/DevOps practices.
- Strong communication, analytical, and structured problem-solving skills; ability to troubleshoot issues using available tools and logs.
- Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams with both technical and business stakeholders.
- Ability and flexibility to travel for business as required

- Strong understanding of API security fundamentals (e.g., authentication/authorization concepts, secure design principles).
- Architectural awareness of application development in a microservices environment.
- DevOps process fundamentals and comfort collaborating with platform/operations partners.
- Passion for learning diverse business domains and technologies and advocating for engineering best practices.
Grade/Level: 09
The salary range for this position is 85,000.00 - 140,000.00 USD Annual and is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.
Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge.
Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

You will be required to commute to your nearest Hub (either virtual or physical) for in-person engagement activities such as regular business or team meetings, training and culture events.

Eligibility Requirements:
- You must be 18 years or older
- You must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process
- You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.
- New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months’ time in position before they can post. All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
