Organizational Overview:
The Controllership organization oversees Synchrony’s day-to-day accounting operations and related governance activities. Core responsibilities include cash accounting, general ledger accounting, client accounting, account reconciliations, period-end close and financial reporting, accounting system maintenance, and control/governance sub-processes. These activities collectively support quarterly and annual close execution and help ensure accurate, timely, and compliant external financial reporting.
Role Summary:
This individual will lead the Asia Reconciliation Team driving process improvements, automation, and strengthening the consistency, quality, and timeliness of balance sheet account reconciliations across Controllership. This role performs and oversees reviews for medium- to high-risk reconciliations, converts review outcomes into actionable process improvements, and partners with process owners to drive simplification and automation.This position requires strong accounting fundamentals, reconciliation tooling/system knowledge, and the ability to influence Controllership, Risk, Internal Audit, and external auditors. The role partners closely with Controllership process owners and account preparers/reviewers to strengthen controls, reduce unreconciled items, and improve reconciliation cycle performance. Lead and develop a team of professionals across reconciliation preparation and review activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Reconciliation Reviews (Quality Assurance & Controls)
- Perform independent reconciliation reviews for medium- to high-risk accounts, ensuring compliance with corporate criteria, documentation standards, and evidentiary requirements.
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve the quality and consistency of reconciliation review practices across Controllership (standards, checklists, and review approach).
- Mentor and develop the team performing reconciliations and reviews; provide targeted coaching to improve reconciliation quality and reduce repeat findings.
- Partner with process teams to ensure reconciliations are completed on time and meet policy requirements.
- Work with process teams to resolve unreconciled items and drive root-cause remediation for process issues identified through reviews and QA.
Reconciliation Administration (Operating Model, Team Leadership & Enablement)
- Lead and develop a team of ~8 professionals across reconciliation preparation and review activities (performance management, workload prioritization, cross-training).
- Lead the creation and maintenance of documentation supporting reconciliation automation and controls, including RPA process documentation, match rules, payment reports, and match rule database.
- Identify, prioritize, and execute process improvement and simplification opportunities, drive adoption, and measurable outcomes.
- Manage reconciliation system maintenance and governance activities, including: new account setup, changes to process assignments/ownership, build/maintain match rules, and payment reports (as applicable).
- Manage the monthly reconciliation operating cadence, including process launch, task management, close checklist alignment, and communications.
- Perform quality assurance reviews to confirm adherence to procedures and to identify standardization/simplification opportunities.
- Analyze monthly metrics and dashboards; manage communications and contribute to reconciliation reporting for process owners and senior Controllership leadership.
- Administer training for reconcilers and reviewers (onboarding, refreshers, and changes to policy/system/process).
- Coordinate creation, maintenance, and indexing of team job aids to ensure current, accessible documentation.
- Manage ticket resolution and troubleshooting for reconciliation processes and reconciliation system issues.
- Provide cross-training and backup support for daily file processing/transmissions and other system administration tasks as needed.
- Drive and lead projects as assigned.
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent experience with 5+ years of Accounting/Finance experience in lieu 7+ years of Accounting/Finance experience.
- People leadership experience (development, coaching, performance management).
- Strong accounting fundamentals and reconciliation experience.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple and varied priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical and critical thinking skills
Desired Skills / Knowledge:
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in controllership, financial analysis, or financial services industry
- Reconciliation software experience (preferred: Blackline).
- Oracle GL, PowerBI, Power Automate, RPA process, AI experience.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent experience with 5+ years of Accounting/Finance experience in lieu 7+ years of Accounting/Finance experience.
Work Timings:
This role qualifies for Enhanced Flexibility offered in Synchrony India and will require the incumbent to be available between 06:00 AM Eastern Time – 11:30 AM Eastern Time (timings are anchored to US Eastern hours and will adjust twice a year locally). This window is for meetings with India and US teams. The remaining hours will be flexible for the employee to choose. Exceptions may apply periodically due to business needs)
