Role Summary/Purpose:
The AVP, Principal Mobile Engineer - Digital Servicing is a senior individual contributor and architecture role responsible for driving cross-platform mobile architecture, technical strategy, and mobile platform engineering across the DSE India Mobile organization. This is not a people management role — this engineer leads through technical depth, architectural vision, and hands-on influence across iOS and Android platforms, with a strong understanding of backend services and API architecture that underpin the mobile ecosystem.
The Principal Mobile Engineer owns the technical direction for mobile platform capabilities — shared frameworks, infrastructure, CI/CD, and developer tooling — and defines cross-platform standards that ensure consistency, quality, and long-term scalability across Synchrony's mobile applications. This role partners closely with Engineering Managers, Tech Leads, QE leads, and platform engineers to drive coherent technical direction across multiple agile teams in a cross-shore development environment.
Can be iOS or Android primary, but operates across both platforms. AI fluency is a core expectation — this engineer actively leverages and champions AI-assisted engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and drive cross-platform mobile architecture strategy spanning iOS and Android, ensuring consistency in patterns, standards, and technical direction across multiple agile teams
- Own and evolve mobile platform architecture — shared frameworks, SDK foundations, CI/CD pipelines, and developer tooling that improve reliability, velocity, and developer experience across the mobile organization
- Lead architectural design and review for complex features, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards, security requirements, and scalability goals
- Operate as the senior technical authority across both iOS and Android — primary expertise in one platform, with strong working fluency in the other
- Partner with backend and platform engineers on shared services architecture, and infrastructure decisions that impact mobile delivery
- Drive technical standards and best practices for code quality, testing strategy, build reliability, and release engineering across mobile teams
- Drive mobile CI/CD platform strategy — build pipeline optimization, shared workflows, policy enforcement (code quality, security scanning), and build reliability automation
- Contribute to observability and release reliability — dashboards, crash-free session tracking, performance monitoring, and rollout stability
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, frameworks, and architectural patterns — including AI-assisted development workflows, code generation, and automated testing approaches
- Actively leverage AI tools (GitHub Copilot, LLM integrations) for architecture exploration, code generation, refactoring, test automation, and documentation — and champion AI-native engineering practices across mobile teams
- Provide hands-on technical leadership through architecture spikes, proof-of-concepts, and reference implementations for complex or foundational capabilities
- Inform technical direction, capability gaps, and team composition from an architecture perspective
- Ensure compliance with security, accessibility, and architecture governance standards
- Participate in PI planning, ART syncs, and cross-train coordination — owning and escalating architectural risks
- Mentor and coach senior engineers and Tech Leads on architecture, design patterns, and technical decision-making — raising the overall technical bar without direct reporting relationships
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Deep expertise in native mobile development — iOS (Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit) and/or Android (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose) — with ability to operate across both platforms
- Demonstrated experience defining and driving mobile architecture at scale across multiple teams or products
- Strong understanding of mobile architecture patterns — MVVM, Clean Architecture, VIPER, modularization, and dependency injection
- Experience designing and building shared mobile frameworks, SDKs, or platform libraries consumed by multiple teams
- Solid understanding of backend architecture — RESTful APIs, microservices, API gateway patterns, and mobile-backend integration
- Experience with mobile CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and release engineering (Bitrise, Xcode Cloud, Gradle, Fastlane, or similar)
- Strong understanding of software design principles — SOLID, clean architecture, domain-driven design
- Experience with asynchronous programming, reactive patterns, and concurrency models on mobile platforms
- Proficiency with code quality tooling — static analysis, security scanning, unit/integration testing frameworks
- Understanding of observability and monitoring for mobile applications — crash analytics, performance monitoring, and release health metrics
- Demonstrated AI fluency — active, productive use of AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot or equivalent) in daily engineering work
- Experience working in Agile environments at scale (SAFe or similar) with cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and drive decisions across teams without direct authority
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills
Desired Skills/Knowledge:
- Experience with AI-assisted engineering workflows — code generation, automated testing, AI-powered code review, and LLM integration for developer productivity
- Familiarity with platform engineering concepts — developer experience tooling, golden paths, internal developer platforms
- Experience architecting mobile SDK distribution and versioning strategies (SPM, CocoaPods, Maven/Gradle)
- Experience with service virtualization, contract testing, and mock infrastructure for mobile development
- Knowledge of certificate management, App Store and Play Store submission pipelines, and release management processes
- Experience with observability tools such as New Relic, Splunk, Datadog, or CloudWatch
- Experience with financial services applications and regulatory/compliance requirements
- Strong track record of driving Community of Practice initiatives, tech forums, or architecture review boards
- Ability to produce clear, concise technical documentation — architecture decision records, design proposals, and engineering guidelines
- Experience working in distributed, cross-shore teams across time zones
Eligibility Criteria:
Bachelor's Degree and 6+ years relevant experience in Information Technology, or in lieu of a degree 8+ years of relevant experience in Information Technology.
