Role Summary/Purpose:

The Project Manager leads process improvement initiatives from concept through early implementation. This role collaborates with Business Owners to shape the initiative’s direction—clarifying the problem to solve, defining desired outcomes and success measures, challenging and simplifying current processes, and aligning stakeholders on the best path forward. The role then converts that strategy into an executable delivery approach by establishing process controls, sequencing work across cross-functional teams, defining scope and deliverables, and producing an implementation roadmap. The role may lead the effort into execution by driving decisions, managing dependencies/risks, and ensuring teams are mobilized with a clear plan or develop a fully formalized plan that can be given to a Program Manager for ongoing delivery.

Our Way of Working

We’re proud to offer you flexibility. At Synchrony, our way of working allows you to have the option to work from home near one of our Hubs or come into one of our offices. Occasionally you will be required to commute or travel for in person engagement activities such as business or team meetings, training and culture events.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead process improvement initiatives by partnering with Source to Pay Business Owners to define the problem/opportunity, target outcomes, success measures, and the recommended path forward.
  • Collaborate with Business Owners to document and simplify processes: Constructively challenge current-state workflows and design future-state processes leveraging technology capabilities, adopting process controls,  while utilizing process-improvement best practices.
  • Drive structured problem-solving and decisioning: Break down complex problems, surface tradeoffs/assumptions, evaluate options, drive decisions to conclusion- escalating as required, and document outcomes via decision logs.
  • Define and document scope, workstreams, deliverables, milestones, sequencing, dependencies, testing strategies, and resourcing assumptions to develop a project plan
  • Manage strategic risks, dependencies, and constraints by utilizing knowledge of the Business Owners objectives and in-flight projects to help inform strategy.
  • Prepare or Lead the initiative into implementation readiness by executing process changes or delivering a complete handoff package to the Program Manager for ongoing delivery for a future program increment.
  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 5 years of experience in project management or similar role; in lieu of a degree, a High School Diploma / GED and 8 years of experience in project management or similar role with a proven track record of effective problem solving skills, working independently and being an expert within your discipline.
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional initiatives from concept through implementation readiness, including defining direction, aligning stakeholders, and driving decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and translate strategy into an executable delivery approach (scope, workstreams, milestones, dependencies, governance).
  • Experience in process design and improvement with working knowledge of best practices (simplification, standardization, waste elimination, clear handoffs/ownership, controls-by-design).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to synthesize inputs into clear recommendations, plans, and leadership-ready materials.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder management experience and ability to partner effectively across Business Owners, technology, and subject matter experts.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Familiarity to Source to Pay, Procurement or Third Party Risk.
  • Familiarity with Source to Pay teams and Coupa preferred for internal applicants.
  • Operates effectively in ambiguity; naturally drives action, clarity, structure, and closure.
  • Comfortable influencing without authority; able to navigate differing priorities and build alignment.
  • Curious and appropriately challenging—asks incisive questions and tests assumptions constructively.
  • Independent and proactive; manages priorities and momentum across multiple workstreams.
  • Simplification mindset; looks for ways to streamline processes and improve end-to-end outcomes.

Grade/Level: 11
